'Madonna and Baby Jesus' Gilded Marble Statue

France, 15th century

Dimensions: 65 x 21 x 13 cm

A 15th century gilded marble statue of the Madonna and the baby Jesus in her lap.
Madonna’s face, despite her missing nose, reflects the serenity and her beauty. Her body is covered in a soft garment, the lifelike folds and pleats are carved in detail. The head and left arm of Baby Jesus are missing, but there are signs of restoration in several parts of the Gothic sculpture. Traces of gilding can be seen mainly on Madonna’s headdress, the sleeves of her dress and the edges of some folds.
