Fire-gilt bronze statue of King Bhupatindra from 17th century Nepal. The statue was made using the repoussé (embossed) technique and was assembled from several parts. The king is seated in vajrasana (legs tucked under him) with his hands forming anjali mudra (two palms together). His face is serene, his head is covered with a traditional headdress, and his body is covered with several layers of ornate cloth. His neck is covered with several rows of chains, his waist with a floral shawl, and his back with a robe.
Bhupatindra King of Malla:
Bhupatindra was a prominent king of the Malla dynasty in 17th century Nepal. During his reign, architecture, arts and culture flourished in the Kathmandu Valley, and he was fond of initiating the construction of various temples and monuments. The culture of the indigenous Newari people also became more popular. The era was characterised by stability, harmony and progress, making King Bhupatindra of Malla a popular ruler.
