Tibet, 14th century
Dimensions: 13.5 cm
14th century Tibetan fire-gilt bronze statue of Amitayus. Amitayus is the Buddha of infinite life, wisdom and good fortune. The buddha is seated on a double lotus pedestal, with two feet resting on the thighs (padmasana – lotus position) and hands on his lap, forming a bhairava mudra. All the crowns, necklaces, arm and leg bracelets are decorated with turquoise, lapis lazuli, pearls and coral. The head has a typical Buddhist crown (mukuta), the hair is arranged in a 3-tiered bun, and floral motifs are on the side of the headdress. The kalasha vase in Amitayus’ hand resembles a stupa and contains the elixir of eternal life. Its sides are also decorated with stones.
