Gilded wood carving of Amida Nyorai from the Kamakura period of Japan. Amida, or Amitayus, is the chief Buddha of Mahayana Buddhism and is also considered the heavenly Buddha of Pure Land Buddhism. Amida stands barefoot on a double lotus throne, his body encircled by a monastic robe, the material of which is arranged in lifelike folds and gilding appears in places alongside the black lacquer finish. Hands are under restoration.
