Japan, Kamakura Period (13th century)
Dimensions: 57 x 98 cm
A silk hanging scroll depicting the Shaka Triad from 13th-century Japan. Shaka, also known as Gautama Siddhartha, the Supreme Buddha, is the central figure in the painting. He is surrounded by numerous followers and devotees gazing at him in reverence. On the sides of Shakyamuni are his two principal bodhisattva disciples, Monju and Fugen. Monju is seated on a black lion, representing wisdom, while Fugen is seated on a white elephant, symbolizing the practice of faith. Together, they form a harmonious triangle with Shaka at the center. Surrounding them are the Eighteen Arhats, Buddha’s original followers and protectors of Buddhism. A dragon, symbolizing good fortune, emerges from the clouds in the background. The painting is polychrome, with fine details highlighted by shimmering gold pigments applied in delicate strokes.
