Although the 25 cm sculpture has a Buddhist theme, it has Hellenistic stylistic features, which were a result of the conquests of Alexander the Great in the region. The head sculpture follows the highly lifelike, human style of Greco-Roman: full lips, broad nose, downward-facing, pronounced eyes. His hair is made up of tiny tendrils that cling tightly to his head. The front of the statue is preserved, the back of the head and neck are missing.
仏陀の髪について
多くの仏像では、仏陀の頭部に小さな巻き毛がびっしりと貼りついている様子が見られます。しかし実際の仏陀は、他の修行僧と同様に頭を剃っていたとされ、髪は「無明の根源」と考えられたため、剃髪が修行の一環とされていました。 ではなぜ巻き毛や粒状の髪が表現されるのでしょうか？伝承によれば、仏陀が菩提樹の下で瞑想していたある暑い日、その熱から守るために地面のカタツムリたちが彼の頭に這い上がり、体液で冷やしたといいます。そして仏陀が悟りを開く頃には、108匹のカタツムリがそのまま頭上で殉死したと語られています。 この逸話に基づき、**仏像の頭部には108個の螺髪**が表現されるようになりました。
